RAM vs. CF

How do you decide where to install software? Should I use C: as a workdisk and only backup to CF when I'm low on battery? ATM, I'm using the CF to save all the files (documents,PDF etc) there as I work. As I already said, I'm new to Psion so there's much I have to learn Smile Thanks.

Cheers!

Generally speaking, I'd recommend installing apps. to CF wherever possible. This in order to maximise the available RAM for running the apps. in. The exception to this might be speed and/or performance critical apps. (e.g. Macro5, ExtraBars, FileSwitch, etc.).

Apps

I would agree with Martin. You will find as you spread out in what you use that with apps installed on the RAM (C) you run out of memory as you try to run many things at the same time. Installing on CF will remove this problem.

However, I do have a warning. Do not remove your CF card with anything running on it, this will make your little Psion VERY unhappy. So do listen to Martins warning: "The exception to this might be speed and/or performance critical apps".

Anything you keep running, or run on startup should be installed in RAM (C) apart from that run free on CF Smile

Bojan,

Absolutely agree with above comments. My 5mx however had problems reading the CF card at low battery levels. The S7 and netBook are not supposed to have this issue, as the machine shuts off before the card becomes unusable.

Other things are that the Opera browser doesn't appreciate being installed on the CF card and reading/writing to the CF card uses more battery power than when using RAM

Having said all that, I have moved most anything that can to CF and don't have any problems except backing up a 128Mb CF card over the serial link can take a looooong time!
