May I have Your Opinions Please On The Best Psion SoftwareHello everyone.
Recently (well months ago now, but work got in my way ) I got an email back from Martin about some software I'd sent him, in his email he mentioned he'd dropped by my website and commented that my Extras bar screenshot showed I had very little software installed. I was surpirsed, I considered it nearly full so I took a look at his 'Hardware & Software' article and was impressed to see several ExtraBars totalling around two or three times the number of apps.
This week I started trying out some of the ones I hadn't heard off or used previously and it got me thinking...
How many other Psion users have never even seen some of these programs? How many of you use progams I've never heard about, and vice versa.
I would like everyone that comes on this forum to leave a message about your favourite/most used EPOC programs, and leave off the ROM apps please, let's try to compile a lovely long list of third-party apps here so we can all learn something and hopefully have a few new toys to play with
I'll start us off.
TomeRaider. I'm sure you've all heard of it but one thing that I only found recently was that if you drop by the Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (English), the online encyclopedia written by "normal people", you'll notice it's amazing in detail and very useful. Well you can get it in a .tr file at http://members.chello.nl/epzachte/Wikipedia/DownloadTR3.html making sure you download a TomeRaider 2 file and not a newer TR3 file of course. It takes up quite a bit of room at over 450MB but it's an amazing thing to have on your Psion. Plus all the other more common files you can get make it one of the most useful reference programs of ANY platform in my mind.
I'm also a big puzzle games player and my Psions never disappoints me, to anyone who loves puzzles/strategy I recommend: Alignment, NoMans Land, Pebbles, psAddle, PsiJong, Psynergy, Quad and last and best I think -- Splitter.
I look forward to reading everyone elses.... Please....

Here's a list I created by myself & PsiDat:
http://free.pages.at/boni/software.html
As you see, the Description is in German but the Stars are more important anyway
There's also a list placed at http://psionwelt.de/workshop/PW_Top100_2003.htm (also German...)
Most important and often used for me are:
WinEpoc
Alarm+
Macro5
nICQ
FastBackup

Ah - good tip! I didn't know it did that. Okay, so I've now made the list much faster than I thought I would. Here's a complete dump (with apologies for the length of the list and the fact that it still contains the ROM apps):-

Martins ListLadies, Gentlemen and Psion Web Browsers I would like to pronounce Martin the winner of the most applications installed! Congratulations, you certainly deserve the title
I would however like to know if anyone who's dumped a list has any more-or-less unknown gems in their System\Apps?

There's *no* way I can compete with you folks! I won't list every 3rd-party app I have loaded on the netBook and 5mx, but will give a list of what I *really* use. Most are on both machines. In addition to the built-in apps, I *use*:
abp5
Alarm+
Backup (5mx only)
Biklog5
BusyView
CityMaps
ColorMagic (nB only)
Crypto
FastBackup (nB only)
Ferret
Collins Eng-Fr-Eng dictionary
Collins Eng-Ger-Eng dictionary
Gen5
iContacts
JB5StopGo
Macro5
Merlin
nSwitcher
PsiWallpaper
ResetPlus
RoutePlanner
I do enjoy messing about with other apps, but in the real world, the above are what get used.

Thanks again.

Oke Jon, here the reasons for using the following apps. In my opinion they are all superb.
Alarm+ - Updating by DST, cuts the alarms, and starts after a reset the app Sysback.
SysBack - Brings my Psion after a reset in his old settings (screen, link, toolbar, ..)
Macro5 - This is my shell to start programs and macro's in a quick way
BackUp - In my opinion the best backup program, because it makes a backup when the the Psion and me are sleeping at 01.00 o'clock.
View+ - A file manager program with MANY MANY MANY options. SUPERB
TomeRaider - There are a lot off encyclopaedia's in this format
Locker - A password program, with a delay function.
MagiKeys - With this macro program I can import standard text or words with a few keyboard clicks.
ABP5 - A Banking Program for you Psion, the layout isn't superb, but in the possibilities, it's a superb program.
EpocSync - With this program I can do a synchronisation with my other Psions
StartUp - With StartUp you can startup all your favourite programs at ones
Gen5 - Now I know who I am and where I come from
REM (RepEvMail) + Groups - I do my email with my netBook and with these programs it's a joy to make a reply or to make an email for a group persons.
The REM layout:

Procyon R-X-XL - THE astronomical program for you Psion, with MANY MANY options and it's VERY accurate in his job. Try it.
Solun - Also an astronomical program for you Psion, with MANY MANY options.
HotKeyVGA - This program you need by you Voyager VGA card for you presentations
Menus5 - An other shell program to launch othe program's or documents
CodeSafe - Here I can protect private information
PostIt - Now you don't need the postit papers anymore.
Fonts - Now I can see the real fonts on my Psion
PDF+ - The PDF reader for my Psion
ColorMagic - With this program you can give you Psion an other external. (Is this the right word?)
Atomic Time - Now you Psion show you always the right time. Every time when you connect your Psion to the Internet the time will be adjusted.
Restart - With this program you can make easy a softrest.

Err, Kees, why do you need SysBack if you already use Alarm+?!

Kees vd Straten

| Jonas wrote: | | Err, Kees, why do you need SysBack if you already use Alarm+?! |
Because Alarm+ calls SysBack after a reset.
But do I understand, that I don't need SysBack anymore?
|
Jonas
|
Well, if you tick everything in the first tab in Alarm+ and also save the actual settings, it recreates the settings after a reset. Like SysBack but more faster...

I did that already
but I did it for the setting of the currency symbol €
Now I can delete SysBack.
Thank you for the explanation.

Okay, I'm now feeling rather guilty for being lazy and just posting everyhing on my machine! Here's a list of non-ROM apps. that I actually use on a regular basis:
PsiDat: The ultimate database tool - and home of Pscience5's pages to boot. And free!
NetUtils: Very hand networking utilities. A must for anyone connecting over Ethernet or WiFi. Also free.
SmtpAuth: SMTP authorisation program since it's not built into EPOC Email. Free again.
MBMView: The ultimate graphics viewing program. Formerly shareware but now free.
RMRZip: An essential zip program for EPOC. Shareware.
BackUp: Ralph Sprenger's version. I like the interface although this is a shareware utility that you can get for free elsewhere.
Crypto: For all those 'sensitive' little files that you prefer to keep secret! Freeware
Toggle!: My own free apps: 'Sound' and 'Link' for easily switching these on and off. I use them as macros.
RoutePlanner (& Citymaps): The ultimate mapping programs for EPOC. Commercial.
abp5: A Banking Program. I've used Malcolm's finance program for many years as it imports files from my bank directly and I can't see any good reason to change! Freeware.
Porfolio: For tracking my shares. Shareware.
Tomeraider: An ultimate reference program - I use it with the OED, Rogets Thesaurus, etc.
ExtraBars: I prefer the UI of this to Macro5 and other program launchers. Shareware.
ebc: For colouring in my ExtraBars! Freeware.
nSISUtil: Very handy for programmers like me! Freeware.
Gen5: A geneology program. I'm currently on a 'family tree' kick! Shareware.
Atomic Time: Keeps me chronologically correct! Freeware
AlarmPlus: Recovers all the system settings after a reset and looks after Summer/Winter times, etc. Freeware.
ResetPlus: Easy way to reset if necessary. Freeware.
Of course, I actually use a lot more programs ,apps, and macros than this - but these are the ones I use almost every day...

Is there nobody else who can tell something about his or her software?

Anyone here that still uses a 5MX as their primary PDA or am I the only one
As I'm new to Psion I'm only using:
PDF - PDF reader
S5Dive - great piece of software for keeping track of my dives
PlBeam - makes IR so much easier
Still learning my way on the Psion playground. Looking for apps to customize my desktop and make the computer even more useful.
I noticed some of you've got PDF+. How'd you register it?
Btw, it would appear that there are only 5 active members on this board
Cheers

NewYou'll still find a few people posting a week. The forums always worth a read.
As for PDF+ you can still find it at http://www.mbrainsoftware.com/Psion/Pdf/Pdf.htm
For customizing I'd try Color Magic and Alarm Plus.
I don't still use my 5mx as my primary, but I do still use it. Martin tends to post a good few apps a month I can play with
If you're looking for apps thats why I asked everyone what they use, there's a lot of good suggestions on this post, I'd recommend dropping in on the Pscience5.net Articles page and look at Martins Hardware/Software setup, you can also drop in on mine at www.baker.karoo.net on the Psion page.
If there's anything specific you're looking for, feel free to ask, someone will reply, they always do
