CFThe maximum is 1GB without partitions, 4GB with 4 partitions(?).
Warning: a larger card will be very very slow!
Warning 2: 512kB will NOT result in twice the memoryspace as 256kB. Why you can read here: http://www.pscience5.net/CompactFlash.htm
A 1GB CF will use maximum clustersize unless you make partitions on it.
I use a 256MB card now, which is slow.
I have had CF problems. I once tried a fast 256MB card (sandisk ultra II): the card couldn't be read. I tried a 256MB (Sandisk standard type): everything worked fine except ther program Street!??? Now I use a DaneElec 256MB, which works fine. The strange thing is: onther 256MB sandisk ultra II which was I bought for my camera does work on the 5mx?
Conclusion: you can't predict which CF will work and which doesn't. So: buy only a card in a shop where they will give your money back if the card doesn't function on your handheld device!

I had a old SanDisk 256MB standard.
That card is VERY VERY slow,
The new Sandisk cards (standard) are very FAST.
SanDisk solve the problems in 2004.
You can use the 1GB SanDisk cards without hesitation

No, as I said here (http://pscience5.myfreeforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=33), I believe it is actually 2GB withour partitions, 8GB with 4 partitions.

Or unless you use smaller clusters (at the potential expense of speed).

Re: CFI have used a 2.2GB CF in my netBook without any problems (apart from speed).
If you partition a CF card for a Psion, how do you access the various partitions?

They show up as separate drives. On a netBook: d:, f:, g:, etc. (since e: is already allocated to the PCMCIA slot).

Re: CFI never knew that!
I still find it amazing what EPOC will do considering it's supposed to be a PDA.
Obviously DOS/Windows does this, but I would never have guessed my Psion would do.
Are the limitations on the CF card in a PCMCIA reader the same or does the OS treat it differently, because I believe it does have a different amount of current supplied to it from what I've been reading.

No, it treats it exactly the same as in the d: drive - except it's e: of course.
There's an interesting thread on this subject at PDAStreet: http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59235

I've now written my own article on how you can partition a CF card (for use on a Psion) from a Windows-based PC. See the 'Articles' page for details.

CF PartitioningHi Martin,
I would like to thanks for your article about partitioning.I had a trouble becouse on none of all "Windows" computers in firm I weren't able to do it. So I tried it under "Linux". An amateur like me who saw this system for the first time should have the same problems as me: I have mount dev/hde1 and than system created partitions hde1p1, hde11p2, hde1p3, hde1p4. This is wrong way!
I had to write command dev/hde and than system created partitions
hde1,hde2,hde3,hde4. This was correct. After that was everything O.K.
Next problem you receive when you have mounted drive. My experience is that drive must be unmounted before partitioning and formatting!
At the end I have to apologize my English since I'm Czech and Eglish is foreign language for me
You pages are best all around the world net. Thank you

Are you saying that currently produces standard CF cards are faster than old ones? I'm using a SimpleTech 32MB CF and it appears to be quite slow (Pac-man takes ages to load). Maybe I should try the new 512MB I recently bought for my Minolta and see, if there's a difference.
Cheers!

Yes the old SanDisk card are slow, the new Sandisk card are faster then the old ones. And I speak about the regular cards.
