I have just bought a Cisco Systems Aironet 340 wireless lan PCMCIA card for use in my Netbook. It works fine with my Belkin ADSL Modem and wireless router PROVIDING I switch the encryption off on the router. Does anyone know if it is possible to use encryption (64bit WEP) with the Aironet 340? It is a pain to keep changing the router settings when I swap between my netbook and my notebook.

Hi Steve,
I have a vague feeling (which I can't justify without going to check properly) that the nB only supports WEP with Lucent-based chipsets - which I'm also guesing that the Cisco card doesn't use.
I'll have a look properly and get back to you.

| Indeed, the cisco doesn't support encryption, while the orinoco card will work. Choose Lucent as driver. |

Thanks guys for the advice. Unfortunately I went throught the route of buying an Orinoco Silver Card. When it arrived, I found that it was a Proxim Orinoco Card and this does not have the Lucent Chipset. Also it is a Cardbus interface and therefore does not work with the Netbook. I have now purchased an Orinoco gold card with the Lucent Technologies chipset and I am now online with my trusty netbook via a broadband wireless router . Soooo liberating!! So a word of warning to others looking for Wi-Fi on a netbook. DON'T buy a new Proxim card!!! (Unless you want to make me an offer for my redundant one) |
