Martin - 7-Zip worked a charm. Thanks. I've only ever used WinZip and had never heard of all the other compression programs for a PC - I'm still really a computer novice.
Yep, I use 7-Zip quite a bit (as well as WinZip). It's biggest advantage for me - apart from its ability to handle all the other compression formats - is its 'Ultra' zip compression mode. This manages to increase the compression achieved in standard zip format by up to 10% (although typically nearer 5%) yet still keep the format compatible with all the standard zip programs (inc. RMRZip, etc.). This is worth having when you're talking about people downloading Mb files from your website!
For what it's worth - here's my experience trying to get some of those .dct dictionaries from the swaj.net site added to my netBook, after using 7-zip to get them..
I copied them, via a card reader, to the folder on the D drive where I keep dictionaries. That is, I tried to copy. during the process I got some sort of error message on the PC and the copying stopped. Put the CF into the netBook and looked at the folder. There were some strange named files. Tried to delete them and couldn't. Went back to the card reader and tried to delete on the PC - nope. I could find no way to delete the files. Tried to reformat the D drive using EDU - no go. The PC did let me reformat the CF card. Then I had to copy the backup files (I keep them up-to-date regurarly) back to the CF- takes a bit of time!.
netBook working OK again, but I'm afraid to try and get those particular dct files I downloaded into the netBook. Has anyone had any problem with any of those particular files?
The ones I tried were Hungarian-English, English-Finnish, English-Russian (full), English-Russian Slang, Russian-English (full).
If there are specific ones you want Keith (the ones above?) - and they're not already in my own SDict dictionary collection - then just let me know and I'll convert them to standard zip format and add them to my site.
I must have overlooked your response, Martin. Sorry. Have you or anyone tried those specific dictionaries mentioned in my previous postings without any problems?
Martin - do you think I might not have problems if I were to use those files if you first converted them to zip files? I'm not too happy having to have to do hard resets. It's primarily because it takes so damned long to do a full restore.
