how do i convert psion word files into MSWORD files without goign throught PSIWIN? This would be particularly useful as I don't always use the same computer...

There are two programs that I have used.

nConvert by Neuon and 2ConnectU. nConvert is still currently shareware I believe and 2ConnectU is now available on the Psicence5 Lost and Found pages.
